Costa del Sol
Recently the name of “Costa Granadina” was changed by “Costa Tropical”. This coast is protected of the North Winds by a mountain which sometimes comes down to the seaside. This privileged coast has long beaches, fishing rocks, hidden coves among the cliffs and sport Clubs. The warm climate, the scarce raining and the ocean breeze produce a semi tropical vegetation where you can find Rose bay bushes , Palm Trees, Cypress, Hibiscus and Spanish Fir, that only grow in Malaga and Cadiz. The proximity of very different areas – mountains, valleys full of cultivated land and the sea, are without any doubt the principal attractions of the coast which are the most outstanding characteristics of the Mediterranean Landscape and culture.
As it was easy to come from the most important and old Mediterranean world, La Costa del Sol was visited by Phoenician, Greeks and Cartginenses. The Roman Empire also turned its tentacles toward it, leaving considerable rests which the traveller can admire in the province and Town Hall museums. But it was the Islamic period which left a deeper track, not only regarding the atmosphere of many villages, but in respect to the most traditional means to make a living, such as land cultivation, unquestionable legacy taught by the original Arabic creators, the craftsmanship where Muslim roots of techniques and design are remarkable. Popular music and the magnificent Muslim Buildings are an obliged visit to the traveller, because they are number one in importance among the Andalusia culture characteristics and consequently of La Costa del Sol..
Christianity in these lands coincides with Modern Age. Between 16 th and 18 th centuries, the cities and villages had Churches and Palaces at that time, totally influenced by Occident, although sometimes it is possible to see Arabic characteristics in the baroque architecture.
There the travellers find a great quantity of modest rural churches. When visiting them, will walk through narrow and hidden streets present in every village of La Costa del Sol. The visit is very much recommended as well as the visit to the Corridors, Rooms and Gardens of La Alhambra.
